15 Admitted to Candidacy at Mass Celebrated by Archbishop Sample

Fifteen men representing 11 dioceses were admitted to candidacy yesterday at a Mass celebrated by Archbishop Alexander Sample and nine other bishops in the Mount Angel Abbey Church. The Rite of Candidacy is an important step in a seminarian’s formation where he declares his intention publicly to prepare to offer himself for ordination as a deacon and, later, as a priest.

The Most Reverend Alexander K. Sample, Archbishop of Portland in Oregon, preached about the rite and then, as it was the feast of St. John Paul II, spoke about how St. John Paul II was a great inspiration to him and how he may not be a priest or bishop if it were not for the saintly pope’s influence.

The Mass occurred at the start of the annual meeting of the Episcopal Council, comprised of the bishops, religious superiors and vocation directors who send seminarians to Mount Angel Seminary.

Concelebrating with Archbishop Sample were Most Rev. John Wester, Archbishop of Santa Fe (New Mexico); Most Rev. Liam Cary, Bishop of Baker (Oregon); Most Rev. Peter Christensen, Bishop of Boise (Idaho); Most Rev. Larry Silva, Bishop of Honolulu (Hawaii); Most Rev. Kevin Vann, Bishop of Orange (California); Most Rev. Jaime Soto, Bishop of Sacramento (California); Most Rev. Peter Brown, Bishop of Samoa – Pago Pago (American Samoa); Most Rev. Robert McElroy, Bishop of San Diego (California); and Most Rev. Gerald Kicanas, Bishop of Tucson (Arizona). Most Rev. Peter Smith, Auxiliary Bishop of Portland in Oregon, also participated in the meeting.
